Think outside the box for the 'Boxtrolls' Cardboard Challenge Contest. | Dearest Geeks of EarthBoxtrolls love boxes like the creators of Coraline and ParaNorman love stop motion.

The kind-hearted tinkers are always making unique devices and doodads out of found materials, and have used their imaginations to build a bustling subterranean community beneath the steampunk-meets-Dickensian streets of Cheesebridge.

And now, they’re thinking outside the box. Because play.

 

During the month of September, kids everywhere are encouraged to build their own Boxtrolls-inspired creations using cardboard (of course) and other recycled materials as part of the Boxtrolls Cardboard Challenge Contest in partnership with the Imagination Foundation’s Global Cardboard Challenge.

In 2013, nearly 100,000 participants from 46 countries including Chile, Rwanda, Thailand, and Bosnia and Herzegovina participated in the 2013 Global Cardboard Challenge. Kids designed and built arcade games, gadgets, castles, robots, rocket ships – really anything and everything they could dream up. They practiced collaboration and creative problem-solving, and learned about math, engineering, design thinking, sustainability, social entrepreneurship, and more. Some events raised funds for local food banks, community gardens, library and school programs, childhood cancer research, gorilla habitats, and the Imagination Foundation.

Entries will be judged on ingenuity, resourcefulness and of course, creativity. Participants who share their creations on Twitter or Instagram using #TheBoxtrollsCC between September 2 and September 29 will be eligible to win the grand prize – an “Imagination Box” packed with amazing (think an Apple iMac, an iPad Air, Microsoft Office, The Print Shop and Kid Pix softwares, a $500 DiscoveryStore.com gift card, and a $1,000 Michaels Arts & Crafts gift card.)
